Focus on Your Kidneys

Focus on Your Kidneys

The kidneys are so important in TCM for overall vitality, healthy aging, and of course hormones & fertility. Most of my sessions with clients involve the topic of kidney health especially since many are experiencing hormone related issues. It is imperative that when healing the body we do not overlook the relationship our organs have. Our body's are beautiful, complex systems with organs that work harmoniously.

Kidneys in TCM

In TCM, your kidneys are responsible for the growth and health of your reproductive system and whole body. Your kidneys are very  important for hormone health and fertility. They also store your Jing which is inherited at birth and gives you the spark of life. It can also turn into Qi (life force energy). Kidneys are one of our main elimination organs which work in harmony with the liver & colon. Too often, it is overlooked when talking about "detoxing".

How to help your kidneys

Hydration

Your kidneys are the fluid filter and remover in the body.  When you are chronically dehydrated, your kidneys are going to be impacted by this. And no I don't recommend a gallon a day of plain water. The type of hydration is just as important as the amount you are consuming. When you drink too much plain water, you can actually flush out too many electrolytes dehydrating you even more. *Plain water means filtered or tap that is devoid of minerals*

Drinking mineral herb infusions, spring water, adding trace minerals, etc are going to optimally hydrate you & support the kidneys.

Keeping Warm

In TCM, it is important to keep your feet warm and your abdomen covered, especially in winter. There is a kidney meridian that runs to the bottom of our foot. When this meridian is exposed to cold, it can be sent to your kidneys' slowing function.

Keeping your abdomen covered or using a heat pad on your lower back/abdomen, will help to bring warmth & energy to the kidneys.

Letting go of Fear

Fear is the emotion of the kidneys. When your kidneys are weak, you may find yourself easily drawn into fear that you didn't experience before. If you hold onto fear, this can directly impair your kidneys from a TCM perspective.

It is important to work through your emotional body as you heal. Your emotions can have a huge impact on your overall health.

Herbs for Kidneys

I love using nutritive herbs for the kidneys. High mineral plants like nettle, oat straw, and alfalfa. Other cleansing herbs esp if you have chronic infections: horsetail, uva ursi, heather, goldenrod, cleavers. In TCM, rehmannia is incredibly nourishing for the kidneys but it also helps to strengthen their energy.

Blessings,

Emily
